The Question & Answer activity allows you to record your spontaneous response to one or multiple questions posed by your instructor. Your recordings are compiled into one recording and submitted to your instructor. You must be prepared for this activity as it requires a timed response that can only be recorded once. In essence, you will be “put on the spot” and need to “think on your feet” to complete this activity.
Here is how it works. When you indicate that you are ready, the video question will play (or if text only, only the text will display) and your webcam and microphone will be turned on. After watching and/or reading the question, you will need to respond into your webcam. When you are finished with your answer click stop, or continue answering the question until the time runs out. The video is automatically saved to the YouSeeU server. You will not be able to pause, stop, retry, or restart the activity. You will not be able to edit your video. You get one chance, and one chance only, to understand the question and respond.
To begin an activity, click on the link in your Table of Contents.
With the activity open, begin by reading the Activity Instructions. The instructions will give you details about the activity and how to complete it.
Since you only get one chance to get it right, it is important that you have your microphone and webcam setup correctly. In the video portion of the screen, the Adobe Flash Player Settings message appears asking you if YouSeeU.com can access your camera and microphone. Click Allow.
The YouSeeU recorder will attempt to verify your webcam and microphone. It will ask you to “Please make a normal sound to activate the recorder.” Begin speaking. When it detects a noise, the message will go away. Continue speaking to check the microphone volume. As you speak, verify that green volume bar moves about halfway across the horizontal microphone bar. Adjust your microphone as necessary.
If the YouSeeU recorder cannot detect a sound, the message “No sound detected? Please check your microphone and sound settings.” will display. If this happens, change your audio input device in the Microphone dropdown menu and try again. If the device is not listed, install or connect the device you want to use.
If you cannot see a video from your webcam, change your video input device in the Camera dropdown menu. If the device is not listed, install or connect the device you want to use.
Next, make sure your speakers are setup correctly. Whether you use speakers or headphones, they need to be working and turned on. You need to be able to hear the question that your professor will ask you in the video. Test them to make sure they are working properly.
Once the video and audio are setup correctly and your speakers are on, you can begin the activity. Click SHOW QUESTION to begin.
DO NOT CLICK SHOW QUESTION UNTIL YOUR AUDIO AND VIDEO ARE WORKING CORRECTLY AND YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY READY TO BEGIN. YOU CANNOT RESTART THE ACTIVITY. IF YOU ARE HAVING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES WITH YOUR COMPUTER AND YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO TROUBLESHOOT, CONSIDER USING A DIFFERENT COMPUTER.
When you click SHOW QUESTION, the question will be posed to you in video, text, or both. Once the question has been asked, wait until your camera turns on before you begin your response. Watch and wait for the text under your camera display to turn to a red Recording now message. When it does so, look into your webcam and give your answer.
A green message that reads, “Not recording yet. Recording will begin automatically in xx:xx.” means that you need to wait before you respond. You may have a few second “buffer” to allow you to collect your thoughts. This will depend on your professor’s settings. If a buffer is built in, you will have a green message with a countdown clock indicating how much time until you need to begin your answer. Wait until the red “Recording now” message is displayed before you respond. If you do not want to wait, click START ANSWER to begin immediately.
Your activity may start recording immediately, while you are watching or reading the question.
As you respond, you will be able to see three timing settings.
- Rec: is the amount of time elapsed since the recording began.
- Min: is the minimum length possible for a response. The Stop button will not appear until the minimum time has been reached.
- Max: is the maximum length of the response. If you are still recording your response when you hit the maximum time, the webcam will turn off automatically and your video will be submitted.
When you are done with your response, click STOP and your video will be automatically uploaded to YouSeeU. Do not close your Internet browser while it is uploading. Your screen will momentarily turn black and you will see the message “Please wait while we direct your video properly. Do not close your browser.”
If you are still recording your response when you hit the maximum time, the webcam will turn off automatically and your video will be submitted.
When you are returned to the activity page, you will see that the Status of your activity will be set to “processing…”. It will take a few minutes for the video to completely process. It will not be available to your educator and class until the processing is complete.
If there are multiple questions to your Q&A activity, then you will be taken back to the original “Check flash for activity” page. You will then follow the same steps as above to complete that next question. If you would like to see how many questions you will be answering you will look to the title bar above the video. To the left of the heading will show you the question number you are on out of the total number of questions.
If you opt to withdraw from any of the questions, then your submission will be automatically submitted on the end date with an indicator to your instructor that you withdrew the question. If there are multiple questions to your Enhanced Question and Answer, when you withdraw, you will only be withdrawing from that individual question, not all of the previous or following questions.
